How it works

Michigan has a work-sharing agreement with the EEOC. A charge filed with Michigan Department of Civil Rights is generally also considered filed with the EEOC ("dual-filed"), and vice versa. You usually only need to file once.

Key notes

Michigan's one-employee threshold is broad. The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act is one of the older and stronger state anti-discrimination statutes. Michigan explicitly protects employees from discrimination based on weight and height — uncommon protections rarely found in other states. Note: the MDCR deadline is 180 days; file with EEOC simultaneously to protect the full federal window.
